Woman who was body-slammed outside a Popeyes by an employee speaks out

A woman who was body-slammed by a Popeyes employee last month in Tennessee, has spoken out about the 'nightmare' as she continues to recover at a hospital with multiple broken bones.

Deborah Staggs, 56, was left with a broken arm in 16 places, nine broken ribs and a shattered knee cap after the early November incident.

Before the attack, Staggs was trying to get a refund after being charged twice for her $13.11 meal, according to Rocky McElhaney Law Firm, which is representing the victim.

Video of the attack quickly went viral with the footage showing people chasing Staggs outside the restaurant.

'I've missed my grandson's three ballgames. I can't get that back. I've missed cheerleading competitions, can't get that back. The things that I've missed is what bothers me the most,' Staggs said. She also suffered a shattered knee cap (pictured)

She is then body-slammed to the ground by a man identified as 29-year-old Deriance Ra'Shaiel Hughes.

Now, Staggs is speaking out about how the incident has kept her away from her family, especially her grandchildren.

'I've missed my grandson's three ballgames. I can't get that back. I've missed cheerleading competitions, can't get that back. The things that I've missed is what bothers me the most. My grandchildren are my life,' Staggs told Fox 17.

Since the video went viral, Staggs has been accused of using the N-word, a racial slur that reportedly provoked Hughes to attack the woman.

But Staggs says that allegation is just not true.

'It horrifies me to hear somebody use a racial slur towards anybody because that's offensive and I don't do that. That was hurtful I would ever be accused of that,' Staggs said.

She also told the station that it feels like she's 'in a nightmare'.

'I don't understand why I even feel sorry for the individual who did this because I felt like he was told a lie and provoked. My heart breaks for him because it destroyed his life and mine,' she added.

Since the incident, Staggs has had two operations and is expected to need months of rehabilitation.

Hughes, who was arrested after he was caught on camera body-slamming Staggs, was subsequently fired from the restaurant and charged with felony aggravated assault.

Staggs had eaten at the restaurant on November 3 and returned on November 5 after realizing she had been charged twice for a $13.11 meal of chicken tenders, corn, biscuits and apple pies.

According to the Tennessean, Staggs spoke to a manager on the phone who told her to return to the Columbia outlet for a refund.

Rocky McElhaney, chief executive officer and lead attorney of the law firm representing her, said: 'When she got there she was treated with hostility and anger from the manager.

'There were words back and forth.'

A spokesperson for Popeyes said: 'These actions run completely contrary to our standards and the integrity of our brand.

'Following an investigation, the franchisee took immediate action and we were informed that the employee has since been terminated. The entire circumstance is highly unfortunate for all involved and we hope to never see this type of behavior again.'

The altercation is one of several violent incidents that occurred within the last few months.

On November 4, a Popeyes customer was stabbed to death during an argument in a line for the restocked chicken sandwich at a branch of the fast food chain in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Prince George's County authorities identified Ricoh McClain, 30, as the man who fatally stabbed 28-year-old Kevin Tyrell Davis following the dispute.

Police Chief Hank Stawinski said only 15 seconds elapsed from when the altercation started to when it ended with the stabbing.

Davis had been 'methodically' cutting his way through the line for sandwiches for 15 minutes before the suspect confronted him at the front counter, the chief said.

It was first released in August, and the chain credited popular demand to its supply selling out that month.

The $3.99 meal, which comes in classic and spicy, debuted for the first time in August and was met with a frantic craze that led to long lines and fist fights at several restaurants.

The sandwich sold out in just two weeks.
