Twitter Drags Tinashe Over Remarks on Colorism and Sexism in Music Industry

Tinashe was under attack Tuesday on Twitter after claiming her mixed-race status and gender have hindered her success in the rap industry.

"There's colorism involved in the black community, which is very apparent," Tinashe said in an interview with The Guardian.

"It's about trying to find a balance where I'm a mixed woman, and sometimes I feel like I don't fully fit into the black community. They don't fully accept me even though I see myself as a black woman. That disconnect is confusing sometimes. I am what I am."

The half-Danish, half-Zimbabwean singer announced her second album "Joyride" back in January 2016, but the record still hasn't been released.

"There are hundreds of [male] rappers that all look the same, that sound the same, but if you're a black woman, you're either Beyoncé or Rihanna," the 23 year old said.

Tinashe has performed alongside Janet Jackson, opened for Nicki Minaj and worked with influencers like Chris Brown and A$AP Rocky.

However, readers on Twitter were not letting her blame "colorism for why she doesn't have a career."

@LelaV89

Tinashe has had it way easier than Sevyn. Sevyn does it all on her own with no support and never ever bitches publicly.

@ShayGizzleXO

Tinashe tried to blame colorism in the black community for her poor album sales. Don't nobody wanna hear that baby whispering music.

@NeWWave_Female

@pettyblackboy

Tinashe doesn't give looks, good music, nor does she body pop half as good as Ciara. She better go join Rita Ora in Neverland.

@jameelajoie

Tinashe, a lightbright, is blaming colorism for her music going triple pocket lint, and this is the funniest thing I'll see today https://t.co/M1z6BDPS2h

@sporker_

But some are rushing to the singer's defense...

@_LipstickJunkie

I won't sit here and let y'all drag Tinashe as if she doesn't give 150% all of the time. While most artist give 30%. I WON'T! pic.twitter.com/rsdyUpBnnG

@chartflops

Y'all will drag Tinashe for "not being able to sing or dance" but go up for someone who literally can't do either but can dress.

@MathewNoKnowles

We're not about drag Tinashe all morning like she can't out-sing & out-write some of y'all faves. pic.twitter.com/TJDxrZUB0l

@Kristopher_TM

Tinashe is entitled to her feelings and her experiences are her own. It is her *structural analysis* of those experiences that is flawed.
