Over in Braemar, the Highland village that hosts the famous gathering on the first weekend of September every year, the Fife Arms was created by the Hauser & Wirth gallery group and it’s as stylish as you’d expect. Unsurprisingly, it’s also home to plenty of eye-catching artworks, including paintings by Pablo Picasso and Lucian Freud, and installations such as Ancient Quartz, a ceiling mural created by the Chinese artist Zhang Enli (pictured). Tartan is used liberally but tastefully, and, yes, there is the odd stag head.
The boutique retreat is the perfect Highland base, as it embraces its locale wholeheartedly, hosting survival workshops for budding adventurers and mini Highland Games for children. There are also occasional creative-writing workshops, since the scenery is likely to unearth something poetic in most guests.
On its doorstep is the Cairngorms National Park, one of the only places in Britain where you can go skiing, and home to several scenic hiking trails.
